Review by CHRISTINE BERARDINO Grade 6 - Sharks - Hosman
My book is called Spike It. This
is a story written by Matt Christopher. It is about a young girl
named Jamie who lives with her dad and younger sister. She is very
happy until her dad remarries. Jamie starts going through a lot of
changes. She gets a new mom and a new stepsister that she has to live with.
The worst part is everything is going wrong and making her life miserable.
This story is fiction and is sports related because Jamie is a star player
on the Sharks, her school's volleyball team.
This story takes place in New York City where
Jamie and her new family live in a small house in the suburbs.
Jamie is the main character of the story.
She is tall, skinny, has brown, shoulder-length hair, brown eyes, and white
skin. Jamie has an attitude problem. She treats her new stepsister, Michaela,
like dirt. She never gives her a chance, always accuses her of doing
things that she didn't even do, and always talks bad to her and gives her
dirty looks. Eventually, her personality changes in the end of the
story. This shocked me because suddenly she feels really bad for
Michaela and pictures herself in her position. So, to make up for
everything she did, Jamie gives Michaela a surprise party. From then
on Jamie had confidence and high self-esteem. Jamie is the most important
character in the story because without her there would be no story because
it talks about her life. The thing that I really found interesting
in this book was that you can actually picture yourself being Jamie and
going through problems.
The most exciting and shocking part of the
story is when Jamie scheduled a rally for her volleyball team because they
had a big playoff game the next day. But the rally was really going
to be a surprise party for Jamie. But to Jamie's surprise, Michaela
did the same thing and made the rally be a birthday party for Jamie since
her birthday was coming up. I really thought that was great how they thought
alike and wanted to become friends and great sisters.
I really enjoyed reading Spike It because
I can relate to how Jamie and Michaela were feeling. Not only that
but I liked reading about Jamie playing volleyball and making it to the
playoffs with her team. It was exciting. I would recommend
this book to preteens because it talks about problems in life and how to
deal with them. Also, I would especially recommend this book to children
who love sports, action, surprises, and happy endings. I thought
this book was great. I hope you take my advice and read it too.
