Review by TERESA CARENZA Grade 6 - Sharks - Hosman
The title of this book is Vanishing
and Bruce Brooks is the author. This book is about a young girl named Alice,
who goes on a hunger strike against her alcoholic mother and her normal
living father over who will get possession of her after their divoice.
She becomes very ill and is in the hospital for a long time. This book
is a Science Fiction book.
This story takes place mostly in the hospital
where Alice is suffering. It also takes place at her father's house
where she lives for a while until she must check into a local hospital.
Also, a small part of the story takes place at her mother's house where
she lives after she leaves the hospital in between her long hsopital visits.
One of the main characters is Rex. He
is a young boy Alice meets in the children's ward section of the hospital.
He is a normal child like Alice, but also like Alice, he is very ill.
He has a disease, and there is no cure for him, so the people at the hospital
decide to see what happens to him. He is a short child with no hair
and long legs. He is very encouraging to Alice and is an adventurous
child. He is important in the story because he in the only one at
the hospital that is really helpful to Alive. Her mother is always
drunk and never knows who Alice is, her stepfather is always too busy for
her and her bological father lives too far away to come and visit.
That is a little something about Rex.
One of the interesting things in the story
is when Rex is dying and Alice wants to go see him but the nurses tell
her she must eat if she would like to go see him. She is too weak
to rise from her bed. She says she will do anything for Rex so she
eats and is allowed to see Rex. She sees him and talks to him, but
he dies just minutes before they take him into surgery. After that,
Alice knows he would have wanted her to live even if he weren't there to
see her. So she began eating and grew stronger. She knew that
is what he would want her to do.
This book was very touching and inspiring.
I think that it had a very good meaning to it. It set standards of
a quality book and I enjoyed it very much. I think that anyone ages 10
to 13 would enjoy this book just as much as I did. So basically this
was a great new choice to put in the Higgins Middle School Library.
