Ruthie's Gift
by Kimberly Burbaker Bradley

Review by JORDAN SALVATO

The book I read is called Ruthie's Gift.  It is by Kimberly Burbaker Bradley. It is Historical Fiction because it is in past time, and it tells the reader things that happened or could happen back then. The book is about a young eight-year-old girl, Ruthie Hawk, who lives with her six brothers.  Sure, she loves all of her brothers very much, but sometimes she wishes for another girl to join the family so it will be easier for her to try to become a lady.
The story takes place in old Indiana in 1916.  The Hawk family lives on a farm with all different kinds of farm animals, acres of rolling green pastures, and orchards of strawberries that grow near the clear, blue and flowing river.
My favorite main character in the story is Ruthie Hawk.  She has long brown hair that goes a little past her shoulders.  She usually wears two braids on each side of her head.  She has blue, starlight eyes and beautiful thin brown eyebrows.  She has light golden skin, rosy red cheeks, a tiny little nose, and a big sweet innocent smile.  She was adventurous, outgoing, unkempt.  However, she was very caring and kind to the animals on her farm.  She tried endlessly to be ladylike, but it was very hard because a lot of things around the house were meant for boys, for her six brothers whom she lived with.  Ruthie is very important in the story because she is the one who you follow throughout the story. She takes you through everything that happens in her life showing you what she lived like and what life was like in 1916.
In the book it is very exciting and shocking when Ruthie's father announced, "The House of Representatives had voted for a war."  Then he said, "The Senate will vote tomorrow, and then we will be at war with Germany."  Everyone was very upset and the mother even started to cry.  One of the brothers asked Ruthie, "Why is mother crying?" and Ruthie replied, "They think Joe (which is the oldest brother) will have to fight in the war!"
I liked this particular book because when I read a book I am most into stories that take place in past times and have excitement.  This book is a kind of book that I can't put down, and I am eager to know what happens next.  If you are like me and enjoy books that have a lot of excitement and more old-fashioned things in it, then I recommend that you read this book, Ruthie's Gift.
