funded by the
Peabody Education Council
The Tremblays have
participated in several Civil War encampments. Stan portrays a
soldier in the Massachusetts 19th Regiment. In particular, he focuses
on Peabody soldier Moses Shackley, Jr. Linda represents the women
volunteers that supported the troops, such as the women in Peabody's Ladies
Soldiers' Aid Society.
Suggested Activities
- Shackley missed the town's first war meeting but he was a source of
inspiration. Describe the mood, decorations and events happening in South
Danvers the week Moses left?
- Speculate as to why he left the Massachusetts 19th and
came home in 1863 before re-enlisting in the 59th corps?
- Write Shackley's obituary for the local newspaper.
Write an epitaph for his grave.
- Should there be a plaque on Shackley's boyhood
home? Why and what would it say?
- Map Shackley's travels, including his likely mode of
transportation.
