Travel Agent to the Ancient World:
A WebQuest
by S. M. Smoller
adapted from a WebQuest
by Joyce Valenza and Len Arlen of Springfield Township High School, Pennsylvania
and
a WebQuest designed by
the Higgins Middle School Project MEET team
Introduction to The Quest
A large group of ancient tourists is planning
a trip but has not yet determined which ancient culture to visit.
As members of a travel agency, you want
to "sell a trip" to your assigned ancient civilization. Not only
do you want to land this big account and prove your culture is the very
best destination, you are also a proud citizen and you want to show this
group of early tourists all your civilization has accomplished.
To clinch the deal, answer the following
question: Why is this civilization so special that our group of tourists
should make a major effort to see it?
Your group will be assigned one of the
following ancient cultures to promote:
| Mesopatamia |
Ancient India |
| Ancient China |
Ancient Rome |
| Ancient Greece |
Ancient Egypt |
| Byzantium |
|
Click on your civilization to find
a list of online and off line resources.
Also, explore these General Ancient World
websites.
The Task
Each group member will be responsible
for two products:
a two-page persuasive essay and a portion
of a travel brochure.
The Process
In this WebQuest you will working together
with a group of students in class. Each member of your group should
select an area of expertise from the following:
-
Traditions: Rituals, religions, customs,
government
-
Food and Fashion: Include what the
culture east, how they get their food, agriculture, hunting; fashion for
various aspects of the civilization, different genders, how garments are
made
-
Arts: Music, art, theater, dance
-
Technology: domestic tools, building,
transportation, architecture, weaponry
Each group member will create a two-page
persuasive essay promoting his or her particular aspect of the ancient
culture for the client.
Once you have completed your essay, combine
your knowledge with that of the rest of your group to create a travel brochure
promoting your civilization. Each group member is responsible for
1/4 of the travel brochure. - Choose your words and images carefully.
You have a very limited opportunity to be convincing. |
