Famous Volcano Eruptions

Assignment: Write a two-page, typed report on any one of the volcanic eruptions listed on the Pathfinders web page.  Your report should be double-spaced.  This report should have two parts:

Part I: Information about the mountain.

Answer questions such as the following:

1.      Where is it located?

2.      What is its height?

3.      What is its history (i.e. When has it erupted?  What is the average time between eruptions?  What happened when it erupted?  What types of eruptions has it had? etc.)

Part II: Describe the eruption during the year stated on the Pathfinders page.

For example, what happened when Vsuvius erupted in 79AD?

Where can you find information on your volcano?

There are links to specific volcanoes on the Pathfinder’s site under “Archives”.  You may also choose to do a search on Google, Yahoo, or another search engine.  Some key words could include:

1.      The name of your chosen volcano

2.      The word “volcano”

In addition, here are some great volcano sites:

http://volcano.und.nodak.edu/vw.html

Tips for writing a great report:

1.      Write the report using your own words.  You are researching the information and then phrasing it so that it is your own work.  Make sure that your understand what you’re writing about.

2.      Use several sources.  The Internet can be a great tool, but still isn’t perfect.  Some sites may contain inaccurate information.  Check to see if the information is accurate by visiting similar web sites.

3.      Ask for help!  Mr. Mirasolo and Miss Schultz are available to help you after school.  Talk to them to see when they are available.
