Assignment: Make a 12”x18” informational poster. The subject of your poster can be any one of the following:
1. Information on a type of rock. For example: igneous rock, sedimentary rock, or metamorphic rock. Your poster could include information on the “rock cycle” and how your type of rock fits into the rock cycle. You could also include how your type of rock was formed, what it was formed from, and where it may be found. You could also include examples of your type of rock.
2. Information on a particular rock. For example: sandstone, basalt, or gypsum, etc. You could include information on what “type” of rock it is. You could show examples of how it is used in everyday life and where it is most commonly found.
3. Information on one particular mineral. For example: iron, zinc, or copper. You could include information on where it is found, what are some of its uses, what it might look like, etc. You could also refer to the Periodic Table to include information about the mineral’s atomic number and atomic weight. (A great Periodic Table is located at this web site: http://pearl1.lanl.gov/periodic/default.htm) You could also list the mineral’s properties (hardness, color, luster, streak, etc).
Tips for making a great informational poster.
· Plan ahead what you are going to include. Make sure that it all fits. Draw a “rough draft” of your poster. · Use visuals (pictures), as well as, “hands on” information, like gluing actual rocks or minerals to your poster. · Use several sources for your information. That can include your textbook, notes, as well as, the Internet.
