Assignment:
You will be creating an anthology of poetry this month.  This may require several trips to the library.
A journal with lined or unlined paper will be essential.  An artist's sketchbook is a good choice.  It should offer enough pages and be sturdy enough.  A thin, three-ring binder is also a good choice.  Poems can be typed, photocopied, or handwritten.
The purpose of this project is to investigate, learn about, and appreciate poetry of various well-known poets.  Students will be required to analyze the poems according to criteria established in class.  The anthologies will be illustrated.  Students may draw, select photos, use greeting cards, calendars, magazines or any other source available to decorate their books.
This is a personal collection and should express the student's personality and taste.  Work and planning can take place evenings and weekends.  This is NOT A ONE NIGHT or ONE-WEEK ASSIGNMENT!
Students may choose from the list of poets posted to the right or may select other poets.  If the poet is not on the list, I must approve of the writer. Biographical information about each author must be included in the student's own words.
Evaluations will be based on the following criteria:
Appearance - This includes neatness, arrangement, orders, lettering, style, color, and unqiue ideas.
Cover page - Title, author, illustrations or illustrator.  The cover should be decorated.
Ttitle page - Title, author, Publisher, place published
Dedication -To or for whom the book was written
Table of Contents - The table of contents lists the book's units or chapters and the page numbers on which they will begin; it will also list any special sections at the back of the book.
Number of selections. Poets (5)
A brief biographical sketch of the author (5-7 sentences), why you chose this particular poet (3-5 sentences); a picture if available.
Five poems written by that author, one per page, at the bottom of the page you will include the following information:
Tone (happy, exuberant, sad, melancholy, excited, lazy, depressed, haunting, humorous, thoughtful, silly, reflective, sarcastic, and so on)
Rhyme Scheme if there is one.  If not, then say the poem does not have end rhyme.
Two different literary figures of speech.  For example: Hyperbole 1.20
                     Personification 1.25
The fifth section will be a Miscellaneous Section which will include one lyric poem by any author you have not included in the previous sections, one narrative poem, one haiku, one limerick, a ballad or folk song, an ode or elegy, and two poems written by you.  Identify it according to type.  No repeats are acceptable.
Page number should be in the lower right corner.  The number only. No parenthesis, page, or p. or pg.
Glossary - alphabetical order that gives the definition of any difficult or technical words found in the anthology.
Bibliography or Works Cited Page - a list of sources used to write the book
Book - Give this information: author, title, city of publication, publisher, and copyright year.  It must be in the following order:
Pringle, Laurence. Here Come the Killer Bees. New York: William Morrow, 1996.

The Cullen Library has citation cards available to help as well.

One poet will be passed in each month starting in November.  All students will work on Shel Silverstein during the month of October.  We will cover this poet together so the students will know what is expected.  One poet for December, January, February, March as well as the Misellaneous Section will be completed by April.  This is a continuing project and will cover material in preparation for the MCAS exams and grade eight.
