Myths are examples of oral traditions at their best!
The Greeks of ancient times did not have the luxury of scientific evidence.
They did not know why certain things happened. Without explanations
people have a tendency to live in fear. Myths were created and told
from generation to generation to ally the fears of an unsophisticated and
untrained people. Where did we come from? How are we to behave?
What is thunder? Where does it come from? What happens to the
sun when it falls from the sky? The myths not only explained natural
events, they also explained human emotions, taught morals, and were entertaining
too!!!
Apollo, the god of light!
In the myth, "Phaethon, Son of Apollo", where the sun
goes when it sets is explained. The main characters learn important lessons
at an extreme price and the moral lesson of not being overly proud or arrogant
is taught.
