Poetry Project-Penguins Cluster - Raftery

Students will be creating their own collections, or anthologies, of poetry, as a final English project.  In recent years, students have truly enjoyed this assignment, as it is easy and fun to do.  Please enable your child to visit the library on several occasions.

A journal, lined or unlined, will be essential  (an artist’s sketchbook has been a successful choice ).  It should offer plenty of room, and be quite sturdy.  Some student’s have chosen a hardbound version of a writer’s journal.  Poems can be photocopied, handwritten, or printed from a computer.

The project – Investigate, learn about, and appreciate the poetry of various well-known authors.  Relay a fact about each author from your investigations.  Draw, or select  photos, copies of famous art works, use calendars, magazines, greeting cards, or your own artwork to enhance your project.

This is a personal collection, and will express something of the student’s self.  Work and planning should take place evenings and weekends, as this is an ongoing project, and NOT a one-week assignment.  In class, the students will be given ideas, and they are encouraged to show their progress and share ideas with classmates.  Journal assignments will be kept to a minimum to allow the students time for project preparation.

A list of authors follows.  Select FIVE authors from the list.  Choose FIVE poems by each author.  This will give you a  minimum of twenty-five poems.  Keep your poems in separate sections, by author.  For extra credit, make a miscellaneous section of other authors, your own poetry, and the poetry of your friends and family.

You will be scored on your creative presentation.  A book full of photocopied poems  with NO personal touches, such as hand-drawn borders, stickers, or colorful, artful additions will  be awarded minimal credit. Your enjoyment of your work will show in your final product.  Have fun collecting and displaying  these treasures in a special way

Penguins - Biographies for Women's History Month - March 2002

Hint:  Although each site works a little diferently, in general, it is best to phrase your search in the following order:
Last name, First Name  - for example, King, Martin Luther Jr.
BUT, if your search does not find any results, check that you have spelled the person's name correctly
and repeat your search.  Next, try entering the name in First name Last name order.
No luck?  Don't get discouraged, try another website.

Wilson Web: Wilson Biographies Plus - Type your person's name in the "Type a name" box and click on "search now".  The database will search by name, unless you change any of the limiters.

Biographical Dictionary - Click on "Search the Directory".  Enter your person's name in the "Name" box and click on begin search.

Lives - Search for your person by clicking on the Letter that starts your person's last name listed as "Individual Lives".  Scroll down the listing, which is arranged alphabetically by last name.

Infoplease: Biographies -  Enter your person's name in the search box.  Pull down the menu reading All Infoplease and select Biographies. Check out the "Biographies by Category" links as well.
