from The History of the Town of Danvers by J. W. Hanson. Refer to the book to compile a citation. p. 92 "...The expectation of an outbreak was realized on the memorable 17th of June, when the battle of Bunker Hill was fought. A regiment commanded by Col. Timothy Pickering on its way to the field of battle passed through Danvers and halted at the Bell Tavern for refreshment. Mrs. Anna Endicott, widow of Samuel who died in August 1809, displeased at the delay, walked up to the Col., and with the voice and manner of an Amazon said, "Why on earth don't you march? Don't you hear the guns in Charlestown?" |
