Frequently Asked Questions Continued

9. How will discipline problems with mentors and elementary student be handled?
Any concerns from mentors should be brought to the elementary school faculty volunteers, parent/guardian advisors, and Jessica Theriault. Students may see Jessica Theriault at Higgins to discuss any concerns they may have and she will help them resolve any issues. If the issue is not resolvable by the mentor and Jessica Theriault, Jessica will communicate with the elementary school and discuss the matter with the principal.

Mentors Matter is a privilege and mentors must be positive role models in order to participate. If a mentor fails to meet the expectations of the Advisor, he/she will be asked to leave Mentors Matter. If a mentor's grades at Higgins decline below "honors," he/she will engage in discussions with Jessica Theriault regarding further participation in Mentors Matter. It will be the sole discretion of Jessica Theriault to allow the student to continue participating and each student will be treated on a case-by-case basis.

10. How will attendance problems with mentors and students be handled?
Mentors and students are expected to commit to their bi-weekly sessions. We realize that emergencies and illnesses occur, and will grant a few absences. The elementary faculty volunteer or parent/guardian advisor will track attendance. If a mentor or student is absent more than 3 times, he/she will be asked to withdraw from the program.

Notification of absences is essential to help avoid elementary school students arriving to a session in which there is no mentor available.

In the event that your child is absent from school, please make an effort to contact the elementary school secretary and/or Jessica Theriault so that the elementary student can make other arrangements for his/her afternoon.

If your child knows in advance that he/she will not be able to attend a session, he/she should notify the elementary student in advance as well as the elementary faculty volunteers and/or parent/guardian advisors.

11. How will my child know what to review with their student?

  1. At each session, Mentors may do the following:
  2. Review the student's agenda book
  3. Help the student with his/her homework
  4. Discuss books the student is currently reading
  5. Review/discuss assignments the student is proud of
  6. Review/discuss assignments the student is not proud of
  7. Assist the student with their workbook if applicable
  8. Assist the student with work left by his/her teacher if applicable.
