Celebrating Our Successes!
Dear Students, Staff, and Families,
While we may dread the short days of winter,
this time of year requires that we remind ourselves to look on the bright side.
Each year, students at Higgins achieve great things that deserve our
recognition.
To start with, I am immensely proud of the
Higgins Middle School students who attained perfect scores on their 2005 MCAS
exams. In addition to a number of 8th grade students who are now in high school,
seventh graders Angela Ellison, Erin Hunt, and Jennifer Mannion all scored
perfectly on their 6th grade MCAS math exam last year! Eighth grade Pegasus
student Alex Conrad aced the 7th grade English Language Arts test last spring.
These students deserve our applause!
Our congratulations, as well, go to the Stars
of the Month and to students honored with Principal’s List, Highest Honors,
Honors, and Honorable Mention.
We thank the students of Mentors Matter, the
leaders of Bully Bouncers and the representatives of Student Council. Our
school thrives because of the hundreds of other Higgins students who participate
in extracurricular activities, who commit to self-improvement, or who simply act
kindly and work diligently each day.
The support of excellent educators and the
dedication of caring families help make these student successes a reality.
Thanks to everybody for pitching in!
Sincerely yours,
Melissa F. Matarazzo,
Principal

Dear Families and Students,
The season is changing from
fall to winter and we are entering the second quarter of the school year. This
is a great time to remind ourselves of the good habits we encourage students to
“fall” into while they’re in middle school. Habits developed here will remain
with students as they continue into high school, college, careers, and beyond!
As you may already know,
successful students:
·
Record
assignments, appointments, and other important events in their agenda book
·
Arrange a
consistent time and place to complete homework each day
·
Regularly
clean out binders, notebooks, backpacks, and lockers to file important papers
and discard unnecessary clutter
As you may have noticed,
many middle school students need our reminders and support to make these habits
their own. Don’t be disappointed if your child adopts these habits more slowly
or less effectively than his or her classmates; keep communicating with us and
practicing with your child. The end result — a student’s success — is worth all
our efforts!
Sincerely yours,
Melissa F. Matarazzo,
Principal

Please remind child to bring his/her lunch money.
The Cafeteria is having a very difficult time collecting money owed to them.
Thank You.

Dear Parents/Guardians,
This letter is to inform
you of a recent case of chicken pox (varicella) at the Higgins Middle
School. Pursuant to Massachusetts Department of Health regulation 105
CMR 300.00 "Susceptible students or staff who are not appropriately
immunized or are without laboratory evidence of immunity or a reliable
history of chicken pox, shall be excluded from school from the 10th
through the 21st days after their exposure."
Please forward
documentation that confirms proper protection against the varicella
virus to the school nurse's office. This includes (1) a note from a
physician stating a history of the disease; (20 proof of immunization
against the disease or (3) a blood test confirming immunity to the
disease. If we do not have this information on file for your child as
of April 5, 2004 your child will be excluded fron school and all
school activities from April 5, 2004 through April 26, 2004.
Therefore, your child would not return to school until after April
vacation, and each time there is a new case of chicken pox your child
will not be permitted to attend school for 11 days.
Thank you for your
immediate response to this request. If you have any questions, do not
hesitaqte to contact Linnea Whalen, the school nurse, at 978.536.4950
or Allison Kincoyne with further concerns.
Sincerely,
Catherine F. Cullinane

Dear Parents,
We have a student in the middle school who suffers from a life threatening
allergy to peanuts and peanut byproducts. We are informed by the student's
physician that even the smell of these products may trigger a reaction.
Due to the nature of our
academic program, all students move throughout the building on a daily
basis. Thus, for the safety of this student, we must make the middle school
a "nut free" facility. Peanuts, peanut butter, or any nut products are not
permitted in the school.
The health and safety of all our students are of vital importance to us. As
severe as these steps may seem, they are necessary to prevent an unfortunate
incident from happening.
Thank you for your cooperation
in this matter.
