1854-2004:150 YEARS OF
GEORGE
PEABODY MEDAL SCHOLARS
PEABODY – The
Higgins Middle School turns trash into
cash by recycling computer ink cartridges and old cell phones. The program, which was implemented
in December 2002, has resulted in the removal of roughly 236 ink cartridges from
the waste stream and more than $470 in profit for the school as of May 29, 2003. Almost 8
cartridges are discarded every second in the United States. The cellular
phones we recycle are provided to third-world countries and battered women's
shelters. The following is a list of startling environmental statistics regarding ink cartridges from www.fundingfactory.com.: q Two and half ounces of oil are used for every inkjet cartridge produced. q Three and a half quarts of oil are used for every laser cartridge produced. q Half a gallon of oil is conserved for every laser cartridge returned. The United States consumes approximately 700 million gallons of oil a day. q Every year over 300 million cartridges are thrown away. q Stacked end to end, cartridges thrown away in one year would cover a distance of over 24,000 miles – enough to circle the earth. q In the next seven years, if all the laser and inkjet cartridges are saved, a bridge can be built from the Earth to the Moon – 223,000 miles. |
