The characters in Charles Dickens' The Christmas Carol drink wassail at parties attended in Christmas present.

Recipe for Wassail
To through an authentic "old English" Christmas party, you must have some piping hot wassail!
 

1 gallon Apple Cider
1/2 cup Sugar (only if the cider is tart)
1 orange
1 tablespoon whole cloves
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Place the whole cloves into the orange piercing the rind, place in a large pot.  Combine all other ingredients and heat slowly.  Let simmer for at least three hours.  The longer it simmers, the better it is and it makes your house smell great!
